Upon arriving in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh in the spring of 2006, David Shulman was greeted by a sight that consisted of rocks, goats, dry shrubs, buffaloes, thorns, and a fallen tamarind tree. Even though Shulman was an expert on South Indian languages and cultures and knew the region well, he made a conscious choice to actively absorb the simple aspects of his surroundings during his seven-month sojourn. He wanted to fully immerse himself in the rich texture of daily life, and in doing so, he became both a scholar and a tourist, a wanderer and a wonderer.

Shulman's diary, titled "Spring, Heat, Rains," serves as a lyrical, sensual, and introspective account of his experiences during this time. He reflects on daily events, such as exploring crumbling temples, battling with stubborn bugs, and enjoying joyful dinners with friends. These reflections are seamlessly interwoven with contemplations on ancient poetry and myths that still hold a significant place in contemporary Indian life.

With Shulman as the reader's guide, we encounter singers and poets, washermen and betel-nut vendors, as well as modern literati and ancient gods and goddesses. We are enchanted by the delightful taste of a mango fresh from the tree, likened to a "golden electrocution." We also experience the intensity of an Indian summer, with its oppressive and inescapable heat. When the monsoon finally arrives and banishes the heat with sheets of rain, we understand why this event is celebrated as a miracle year after year.

"Spring, Heat, Rains" is an unabashedly personal account from a scholar who never allows his deep knowledge to overshadow his joy of discovery. It is a passionate act of sharing, a truly unforgettable gift for anyone who has ever dreamed of India.
